Failed Sly Stallone sports movies

Sunday, June 14, 2009

Some sports movies come along and stand the test of time. "Hoosiers", "A Field of Dreams", "Miracle" all combine wonderful story lines and some of top actors of their actors of the time, creating a moving piece of cinematic art that renews the passion for sports in all of us. And sometimes people make movies about arm wrestling for custody of your son. Sylvester Stallone has cornered the market on ridiculous plot lines in sports movies. "Over the Top", "Victory", "Drive" combine Sly's bad acting with a plot with more holes in it than a Tijuana donkey show. I'm not entirely sure what that means, but I'll go with it. "Victory" for the two of you who do not know is a movie starring Sly and Pele as Allies captured by the Nazis and put into a prison camp. Led by Michael Caine, they create a soccer team to play against the German National Team. I won't tell you how it ends, but at one point they decide to finish the game instead of escaping the Nazis.

In honor of Versus showing Victory in HD last night, and keeping with the theme of completely insane plot lines, I present five sports movies that just missed out on being green-lighted.

"Rolling Stones" stars Sylvester Stalone as Blaine Boyer, a down on his luck factory worker who has lost everything. In order to get back on top and follow his dream of becoming Prime Minister of Canada, he joins a local curling club in hopes of winning Nationals. Not sure how one leads to the other, but I guess I will just have to see the movie.

"Stuffed" stars Sylvester Stallone as Ralph Moreno, a down on his luck stock broker who has lost everything. In order to get back on top and save the family farm, Moreno must enter the world of competitive eating. Will he keep down 60 hotdogs and 3 pounds of potato salad to keep the ranch? Find out, in "Stuffed".

"King Me" stars Sylvester Stallone as Ricky Serano, a down on his luck heart surgeon who finds himself on the outside looking in after botching the President's open heart surgery. In order to restore the respect he once had, Serano must compete in a checkers competition at the local VFW Hall. Can he win it all and restore his good name? Find out, in "King Me".

"The Shuttlecock" stars Sylvester Stallone as Monty and Keanu Reaves as Eddie, two dock workers down on their luck after the hurricane destroyed their dock. In order to rise from the ashes, Monty and Eddie team up to form a badminton team, the likes of which have never been seen. Can they rise through the ranks and make a better life for themselves? Find out, in "The Shuttlecock".

"Escape from Beirut" stars Sylvester Stallone as undercover cop Jake Rizzo. Rizzo gets a little too deep undercover investigating the crazy underworld of a college fraternity. His cover is blown when his Bad Boys ringtone goes off during a hazing ritual. In order to survive, Jake must fight for his life in a winner-take-all game of beer pong. Will he make it out and see his daughter again? Only if he can "Escape from Beirut".

BallHype: hype it up!
